Glacier Valley Incident
NANA Management Services (NMS), 2022
Last year, 12 children and two adults at Glacier Valley Elementary School in Juneau, Alaska, mistakenly drank floor sealant thinking it was milk. The Juneau School district contracts with NANA Management Services (NMS) for food services. NMS is a client of Yuit Communications and engaged our team for crisis communication efforts. Through strategic communications, Yuit helped NMS navigate the crisis with transparency that resulted in mitigating negative public sentiment and damage to the company brand.
El Faro Incident
TOTE Maritime, 2015
Tragically, TOTE Maritime lost a ship carrying 25 million pounds of cargo and all crew members at sea off the coast of Puerto Rico. Yuit managed the company’s public communications, writing much of it ourself, to issue updates and correct inaccuracies through multiple channels, including social media, press releases and website updates. The company was publicly questioned about issues such as over-reliance on technology and adequate crew training. Our team responded quickly with facts and evidence to reassure the public and maintain customers’ and stakeholders’ confidence in the company.
Kulluk Incident
Shell Oil, 2012
As mentioned, our senior leaders and staff had significant experience in crisis communications training and real-world experience before Yuit was formed, particularly with major oil producers, including ExxonMobil, Shell and Hilcorp. In 2012, when Shell’s drilling barge Kulluk broke its tow line and ran aground near Kodiak Island, Grant and Ingrid both worked in the round-the-clock Joint Incident Command issuing frequent communications to the whole world.
